Alcove Deli and Cafe, 92B Kedron Brook Road, Wilston QLD 4051, Ph: 0731611591

Date of Review: 13 October 2012

Surrounded by gourmet produce and lush plants, Alcove's casual al fresco dining stands out from the crowd. Alcove is bustling with regulars, despite only opening in July 2012, and it is hard to find a spare table . Unfortunately you can't book ahead either to secure a spot. Luckily we don't have to wait long. As well as being gluten-free friendly, the cafe is also dog-friendly, which means we can even let our pooch park up front.

Atmosphere: 5/5

Alcove has a range of menu items for both breakfast and lunch and plenty of gluten-free options. It was difficult to choose between the pineapple and quinoa crunch muesli and natural yoghurt or the Italian eggs, slow-cooked with Italian pork sausage in rich tomato sauce. As usual, I was feeling extra hungry and so decided on the latter. A short while later the eggs came out in a small crockery pot accompanied by some gluten-free toast. This meal was meaty - both literally and figuratively. The pork sausages were gluten-free which automatically amps up the meat volume, plus the tomato sauce was rich and hearty. The eggs were perfectly poached and the toast was buttery delicious.

Food: 18/20

From the moment I called to enquire whether Alcove was gluten-free and dog-friendly, the staff were great and extremely helpful. So helpful in fact, that when my friend forgot to order my dish gluten-free, the waiter prompted her!

Staff: 10/10

The menu ranged in price from $4 to $14 - definitely making it value for money. The deli is slightly more pricey - but the apricot and almond jam was worth buying. There is a good range of gourmet gluten-free products too.

Value: 10/10

Due to the high turnover during the weekend, it would have been impossible for anyone to have achieved consistently high cleanliness.

Cleanliness: 3/5

TOTAL SCORE: 46/50 or 92%
