Public, Level 1, 400 George Street, Brisbane, QLD 4000, Ph: 0732102288Date of Review: 17 September 2012
Situated high above George Street, Public is uber modern and sleek. The establishment exudes sophistication and class. We are greeted at the door and escorted to our table for lunch service. Although it is only a Monday, Public proves to be popular.
The menu is tapas-style and recommends 2 - 3 dishes per person. Based on this advice, we order the: Triple Cream Brie, Apple Risotto, Fennel ($18.00); Texas Brisket, Flour tortilla (without the tortilla), Chilli Sauce ($26.00); Garden Peas, Mint and Feta ($7.50); and Potato Skins ($7.50). Plus a couple of glasses of cool white wine at $8.50. The food takes a while to come out, but when it does, it is fantastic. Despite checking with the waitress as to which dishes are not gluten-free and making sure we order accordingly, the apple risotto arrives with a garnish of sliced toasted ciabatta on top. After explaining again that I am gluten-free - the waitress apologies, stating she didn't realise how much gluten I could tolerate and whisks the dish away to be remade.
The apple risotto is creamy and the mini camembert on top melts in your mouth. The beef is tender and pulls apart easily and the sweet chilli sauce and coleslaw complements it nicely. The potatoes are hand cut and crisp and the sourcream is bacon flavoured. The garden peas are delicious and come heaped in a bowl with mint and feta crumbled throughout.
Four dishes between two people is more than enough and we leave feeling extremely full. If I dined here again, I would recommend ordering only 3 dishes between two people.
The staff were warm and welcoming and very accommodating when it came to discerning which dishes on the menu could not be made gluten-free. For the record, they are the Mac n Cheese and the Kentucky Fried Duck. The service was a bit slow though.
At $75.50 for two people, Public is fairly pricey. Although the quantities are large which partly compensates for this.
