Chez Laila, Shop 3/13, Portside Wharf, Hamilton, QLD, Ph 07 38684235Date of Review: 19 May 2012
A group of us strolled down to Portside Wharf one Saturday morning looking for brunch. I hadn't done my usual research of the menu to check whether gluten-free was going to be a problem. It was. Although the cafe itself has nice decor and reasonably sized indoor (but limited outdoor) dining, it is oddly positioned so that it doesn't get that much sun, making us all scramble to catch some winter sun just to warm up!
The menu didn't have any gluten-free options highlighted, so immediately I knew I was going to be in for a painful journey. Only a couple of cakes inside the cabinet were marked gluten free. This meant the range of options available to me on the menu was extremely limited. When my eggs benedict with spinach did arrive, the eggs were overly poached and rubbery and the hollandaise sauce was thick and gooey and bland. Not pleasant.
The staff were relatively helpful despite my questioning about what I could actually eat. The service was prompt too and our meals arrived quickly, despite the long wait at the counter to order.
The food was reasonably priced but due to the poor quality probably not worth the price.
TOTAL SCORE: 35/50 or 70% but I think I am being generous!
